On September 4, 2019, the first annual meeting of the 7th session of the China Polyurethane Industry Association and the 25th-anniversary celebration were held in Guangzhou. The meeting pointed out that over the past 25 years, under the leadership of the China Polyurethane Industry Association, China’s polyurethane industry has grown from small to large and from weak to strong, achieving comprehensive breakthroughs in production scale, product variety, and technological level. Today, China has become the world’s largest producer and consumer of polyurethane.

The U.S. footwear industry cannot decouple from China.

“China is the United States’ largest supplier of footwear. The U.S. imports roughly 2.3 billion pairs of shoes each year, with 70 percent coming from China. Both U.S. and Chinese manufacturers and consumers are victims of the U.S. government’s tariff policies—no party stands to benefit,” said Matt Priest, president of the U.S. Footwear Wholesalers and Retailers Association, in a recent media interview.

The Impact of the U.S.-China Trade War on the MDI Market

Polymeric MDI is an important raw material for polyurethanes. It was initially included on the list of Chinese import products worth 200 billion U.S. dollars, which are subject to tariffs imposed by the U.S. Trade Representative based on China’s trade practices. As of September 24, 2018, the import tariff on U.S.-origin polymeric MDI imported from China was 10%. This tariff rate was subsequently raised to 25% on May 10.
