Twenty-Four Solar Terms | Today is the Beginning of Winter

Li Dong, one of the 24 solar terms, is also a traditional festival of the Han ethnic group. It falls between November 7 and 8 on the Gregorian calendar, when the sun reaches a celestial longitude of 225°. After Li Dong, the duration of daylight will continue to shorten, and the sun’s altitude at noon will keep declining. During the Li Dong period, among the Han people, the Winter Solstice is traditionally regarded as the beginning of winter, and there is a custom of nourishing oneself with rich foods to get through the harsh winter months.

Hanlu is a seasonal term marking the depth of autumn and the fifth solar term of the autumn season. In folk tradition, there’s a saying: “The dew first turns white, then grows cold.” This means that after the White Dew solar term, the dew gradually shifts from carrying a hint of coolness in early autumn to exuding a distinct chill by late autumn—“White Dew on the verge of frost.” During the Hanlu period, people can clearly feel the changing temperature differences.
