On September 4, 2019, the first annual meeting of the 7th session of the China Polyurethane Industry Association and the 25th-anniversary celebration were held in Guangzhou. The meeting pointed out that over the past 25 years, under the leadership of the China Polyurethane Industry Association, China’s polyurethane industry has grown from small to large and from weak to strong, achieving comprehensive breakthroughs in production scale, product variety, and technological level. Today, China has become the world’s largest producer and consumer of polyurethanes.

Yang Maoliang, Chairman of the China Polyurethane Industry Association and General Manager and Party Secretary of Haohua Chemical Technology Group Co., Ltd., stated at the conference that since the reform and opening-up, and especially over the past 25 years since the establishment of the China Polyurethane Industry Association, polyurethane—a nascent industry—has achieved comprehensive breakthroughs in areas such as production scale, product variety, and technological level. Through digestion and absorption of foreign technologies, independent innovation, and continuous advancement, polyurethane has attained a series of remarkable achievements in both raw material production and downstream applications, successfully transitioning from nothing to something and from small to large, thereby making outstanding contributions to economic and social development.

According to reports, China has now become the world’s largest producer and consumer of polyurethane materials. The technological levels of production for major raw materials and key products have either reached or are approaching internationally advanced standards, and leading enterprises have stepped onto the global stage. Among them, Wanhua Chemical ranks first in China in terms of both MDI and TDI production capacity. Statistics show that in 2018, polyurethane product output reached 11.3 million tons, and the total output of isocyanate chains (TDI, MDI, and HDI) reached 3.57 million tons. Of this total, TDI accounted for over 20% of the output, MDI accounted for more than 70%, and polyether polyol output was 2.72 million tons.

Zhao Zhiping, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee and Deputy Secretary-General of the China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Federation, extended warm congratulations on the 25th anniversary of the founding of the China Polyurethane Industry Association. He noted that, under the impetus of Academician Li Junxian, a collaborative group for the national polyurethane industry was established in October 1984. In 1994, the China Polyurethane Industry Association was officially registered with the Ministry of Civil Affairs. Over the past 25 years, the China Polyurethane Industry Association has fully played its role as a bridge and link within the industry, making significant contributions to promoting the healthy development of the industry, safeguarding its legitimate rights and interests, and enhancing its positive public image. As a result, its social standing and influence have steadily grown, making it a leading banner driving the development of China's polyurethane industry.

At this meeting, the association’s new board of directors was elected, and Yang Maoliang was re-elected as chairman. He stated that, standing at a new historical starting point, the polyurethane industry must adhere to innovative development, enhance its industrial competitiveness, and elevate its level of sustainable development. To boost the capacity of enterprises in the polyurethane industry, the Polyurethane Association should: first, carry out extensive publicity efforts to ensure that all sectors of society fully understand, adopt, and expand the applications of polyurethane; second, lead technological innovation within the industry, accelerate industrial upgrading, and promote the industry’s healthy and sustainable development; third, strengthen its ties with the government, address common industry challenges, safeguard the industry’s collective interests and market order; and fourth, reinforce organizational development, standardize association management, and continuously enhance its credibility.

The conference also unveiled the first documentary on the polyurethane industry, “A Glorious Journey of China’s Polyurethane Industry,” as well as the reportage “Steadfast Progress, Pursuing Dreams—A Chronicle of China’s Polyurethane Industry.” Yang Maoliang stated that these two works—the first documentary and reportage centered on the development of China’s polyurethane industry—are not only a tribute to the industry’s historical journey but also a profound summary of its innovative experiences. They will provide valuable insights and lessons for the industry’s future development.

At the meeting, the China Polyurethane Industry Association recognized 60 organizations that have made outstanding contributions to the development of the industry, including the 9 most influential enterprises in the polyurethane sector, the 20 pioneering enterprises in polyurethane innovation and entrepreneurship, and the 31 outstanding member enterprises in the polyurethane industry.

China’s polyurethane industry has been developing for four decades, and Jintang Technology has been growing for nearly a decade.
