TPU is short for Thermoplastic Urethane. In Chinese, it’s called thermoplastic polyurethane elastomer. Of course, some people also refer to it simply as polyurethane; however, in reality, polyurethane encompasses many different types of materials. Generally, most people tend to use the term “PU” when referring to polyurethane.

I. What is TPU?

TPU stands for Thermoplastic Urethane. In Chinese, it’s known as thermoplastic polyurethane elastomer. Of course, some people also refer to it simply as “polyurethane.” However, in reality, polyurethane encompasses many different types of materials. Generally speaking, most people tend to use the term “PU” when referring to polyurethane. So there’s no need to get overly fixated on this particular point. The main purpose of this article is to help you understand what TPU actually is—and if you’re curious, let’s take a closer look at its composition!

Thermoplastic polyurethane elastomers, as the name suggests, are a type of polymer material formed through the polymerization reaction of diisocyanate molecules—such as toluene diisocyanate (commonly abbreviated as TDI) or methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (commonly abbreviated as MDI)—combined with macromolecular polyols and low-molecular-weight polyols (also known as chain extenders).

The molecular structure of TPU consists of alternating rigid segments formed by the reaction of MDI or TDI with chain extenders, and flexible segments formed by the reaction of diisocyanate molecules such as MDI or TDI with macromolecular polyols.

Featuring superior properties such as high tensile strength, high tensile modulus, excellent toughness, and outstanding resistance to aging, TPU is a relatively mature and environmentally friendly material. Today, TPU is used in nearly every industry. Compared with other plastic materials, TPU boasts higher strength and better toughness. Moreover, it exhibits exceptional performance in wear resistance, high-temperature resistance, cold resistance, oil resistance, hydrolysis resistance, anti-aging, UV resistance, high waterproof and moisture-permeable properties, windproof, cold-proof, antibacterial, antifungal, and thermal insulation capabilities—features that set TPU apart from other plastic materials.

II. How to classify TPU:

TPU can be classified according to its molecular structure into two types: polyester-based and polyether-based.

According to processing method, they can further be classified into: injection-grade, blow-molding grade, extrusion-grade, demolding-grade, film-blowing grade, foaming grade, coating-grade, hollow-grade, rotomolding grade, fiber-drawing grade, hot-melt grade, and so on.

Classified by application level, they can be further divided into: general-purpose grade, medical-grade, food-grade, wire and cable grade, pipe-grade, film-grade, sheet-grade, optical-grade, and filler-grade, among others.

By property grade: wear-resistant, transparent grade, hydrolysis-resistant, low-temperature resistant, high-temperature resistant, UV-resistant, high-flow, anti-aging, high-strength, flame-retardant grade, standard grade, weather-resistant, thermally stable, high-impact resistant, chemical-resistant, reinforced grade, toughened grade, antistatic, high-gloss, conductive grade, high-rigidity, high-sliding, powder form, highly crystalline, and more.

III. Applications of TPU Materials

Basically, TPU products can be found in virtually every field—whether as a component part, a decorative element, or even a finished product. Among the most common applications are apparel and accessories, daily-use items, sporting goods, safety and protective equipment, fashion accessories, footwear and headwear, industrial products, toys, pet supplies, textile accessories, transportation accessories, and electrical and telecommunications equipment, among others.

Applications in garment and apparel accessories:

Transparent elastic bands (also known as shoulder straps or stretch bands), women’s shoulder straps (which can be used in lingerie or fashion garments, serving either a transparent, invisible function or a decorative purpose), TPU belts (available in two types: simple extruded and coated extruded), clothing labels, trim strips for fashionable garments such as down jackets—these are just a few examples of the diverse range of products we offer.

Applied to automotive components:

Spherical couplings, dust covers, pedal brakes, door lock striker pins, bushing plate spring bushings, bearings, vibration-damping components, interior and exterior trim parts, anti-slip chains, etc.;

Applied to mechanical and industrial components

Various gears, seals (primarily for wear resistance and oil resistance), shock-absorbing components, mold-picking pins, bushings, bearings, covers, connectors, rubber screens, printing rollers, and more;

Applied to footwear:

Softball shoes, baseball shoes, golf shoes, soccer cleats—soles and forefoot areas; women’s shoe heels; ski boots; safety boots; high-end shoe soles; light-guiding laces, and more.

Pipes · Hoses

High-pressure hoses, medical hoses, hydraulic hoses, pneumatic hoses, fuel lines, coating hoses, conveying hoses, fire hoses, and more;

Thin films · Sheets

Timing belts (with a certain tensile effect), air cushions, diaphragms, keyboard boards, composite fabrics, and the like;

Wires and Cables

Power communication cables, computer wiring, automotive wiring, exploration cables, and more;

Other

Self-centering wheels, handles, watch straps, various O-rings, round belts, V-belts, synchronous belts, anti-slip belts, TPU-coated woven tapes, transparent elastic bands, and more.

In short, the applications of TPU materials are even more extensive than we had imagined.
