Thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) is a class of polyurethane that can be plasticized upon heating and dissolved in solvents. Compared with both compound-type and cast-type polyurethanes, thermoplastic polyurethanes have virtually no or very few chemical crosslinks in their chemical structure; their molecular chains are essentially linear, yet they do exhibit a certain degree of physical entanglement.

The concept of physical crosslinking, first proposed in 1958 by Schollenberge C.S., refers to reversible "connection points" existing between linear polyurethane molecular chains that become active upon exposure to heat or solvents. These connection points are not true chemical crosslinks, yet they function in a manner analogous to chemical crosslinking. Thanks to this physical crosslinking effect, polyurethanes have developed a multiphase morphological structure theory. Hydrogen bonding in polyurethanes plays an enhancing role in their morphology and enables them to withstand higher levels of humidity.
