The Vernal Equinox is the fourth of the Twenty-Four Solar Terms. “The Vernal Equinox marks the moment when yin and yang are in perfect balance; hence, day and night are of equal length, and temperatures are neither too cold nor too hot.” The single character “fen” (meaning “division”) clearly delineates the boundary between day and night, as well as between cold and heat. At this time, the Sun’s ecliptic longitude is 0 degrees, and its position lies directly above the equator. According to historical records, “when the Big Dipper points to Ren, it signifies the Vernal Equinox. As the Sun completes its annual journey around the ecliptic, the day and night become equally divided in both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. Moreover, since it occurs exactly at the midpoint of spring, it is named the Vernal Equinox.”
