Awakening of Insects | The spring thunder rumbles, and all things grow.
“As the spring thunder rumbles, all things begin to thrive.” During the Awakening of Insects period, we’re blessed with splendid “nine-nine” sunny days—temperatures rise, rainfall increases, and farmers are kept busy. As Zuo Heshui put it: “A single clap of thunder awakens snakes and insects; a few gentle showers dye the landscape purplish-red. In the Jiangnan region during the ‘nine-nine’ days, warm breezes carry the scent of spring, and the lush green fields herald the start of spring plowing.” At this time, except for the northeastern and northwestern regions of China, which still bear the snowy, wintry scenery, most other areas have seen their average temperatures climb above 0℃. In North China, the daily average temperature ranges from 3 to 6℃; in the Jiangnan region, it’s over 8℃; and in the southwest and South China, temperatures even reach 10 to 15℃—a clear sign that spring has fully arrived, bringing with it a warm and vibrant atmosphere.

When you enjoy a bowl of tangyuan—whose name sounds similar to “tuan yuan,” meaning “reunion”—it symbolizes togetherness, harmony, and peaceful coexistence. Tangyuan embodies beautiful aspirations and cherished hopes for happiness; it’s a blessing, a prayer for a smooth and fulfilling journey ahead.

As we bid farewell to the old and welcome the new, Jintang wishes everyone a happy New Year!
The customs for New Year’s Day include setting off firecrackers, replacing peach charms, drinking Tu Su wine, staying up late to divine the coming year, and enjoying festive activities such as lantern displays and entertainment.
Throughout Chinese history, successive imperial dynasties would hold celebratory ceremonies and rituals on New Year’s Day, including offering sacrifices to various deities and ancestors, writing door couplets and hanging Spring Festival banners, inscribing the character “fu” (meaning blessing), and performing dragon dances. Gradually, among the common people, festivities also took shape, featuring worship of gods and Buddhas, honoring ancestors, pasting Spring Festival couplets, setting off firecrackers, staying up late into the new year, sharing reunion dinners, and a wide array of lively “shehuo” performances and celebrations.

May joy and happiness always be with you! May the Golden Soup wish everyone a happy holiday!
Christmas is a traditional Western holiday. The Church traditionally holds the Midnight Mass on Christmas Eve, December 24th—the early morning of December 25th—to celebrate the birth of Jesus; hence it is also known as "Christmas." Therefore, Christmas is a religious holiday.

Legend has it that Zhang Zhongjing, a renowned physician from Henan, worried deeply about his impoverished fellow villagers. On the winter solstice, he set up a makeshift medical clinic in an open space near the eastern gate of Nanyang and began distributing “Quhan Jiaoe Tang”—a soup designed to ward off the cold—to the poor. The “Jiaoe” referred to what we now know as dumplings. After consuming this soup, people felt warmth spreading throughout their bodies and their ears grew warm and flushed. Thus, the custom of eating dumplings on the winter solstice came into being.
