TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane) is gaining increasing popularity due to its superior performance and eco-friendly concept. Currently, wherever PVC is used, TPU can serve as a viable substitute for PVC. Yet, in terms of the advantages that TPU possesses, PVC simply cannot compare.
TPU not only boasts exceptional high tensile strength, high tensile modulus, toughness, and resistance to aging, but it is also a well-established, environmentally friendly material. Currently, TPU is widely used in: footwear materials, apparel, inflatable toys, sports equipment for both water-based and underwater activities, medical devices, fitness equipment, automotive seat materials, umbrellas, suitcases, handbags, and more.
TPU films are produced by processing TPU granules through techniques such as calendering, casting, blown film extrusion, and coating to create thin films. Currently, they are widely used in athletic footwear—for decorative logos on soles and uppers, air bags, air cushions, oil pockets, and more.
TPU shoe materials and TPU films are seeing two emerging trends in their application to athletic footwear:
First, the fashion trend sparked by women’s sandals involves using highly transparent TPU films—either cut directly, screen-printed with colors, or laminated onto fabric bases to create quilted fabrics. These materials are then thermoformed and bonded onto the shoe upper, achieving both functional and decorative effects.
Second, waterproof and breathable TPU films are laminated with fabric used for footwear materials to achieve both waterproofing and breathability.
